Заседание киноклуба любителей английского языка «Куда приводит любопытство / Curiosity killed the cat»

    • вступительные игры, задания «для разогрева» (ice breakers, warmers);
    • ролевые игры и групповые дискуссии (role-plays, discussions);
    • проектную деятельность (project work);
    • задания, в которых учащиеся должны узнать об интересах друг друга, привычках, предпочтениях и характере (guides, questionnaires);
    • упражнения на символическое превращение отрицательных эмоций в положительные;
    • проблемные ситуации, предполагающие самостоятельный поиск выхода.

Деятельность киноклуба также может быть направлена на развитие EQ. Киноклуб – это возможность не только соприкоснуться с другим опытом, пережить разные чувства и эмоции, но и поделиться своими впечатлениями от увиденного, услышать разные мнения.

В сценарии заседания киноклуба «Куда приводит любопытство / Curiosity killed the cat» представлены задания, направленные на развитие EQ.

Course of Session

Step 1. Ice-breaker ‘Find Horror Movies’ (slides 23)

Hopefully your audience is familiar with scary movies. This is a little Halloween fun for the movie buffs!

What movies do you see? 40 horror movies are hidden in one image! Please, identify the prop/character to find the movie it references. Name 1 movie from this picture. All the movies are Hollywood Movies. How many bone-chilling Horror films can you unearth? (Find Appendix 1 for the answers).

Step 2. (slide 4)

Tell students that they are going to watch a short film Alma. It is a 2009 Spanish computer-animated film produced by ex-Pixar animator Rodrigo Blaas. It had received notable recognition at the Fantastic Fest awards. The word “alma” in Spanish means “soul”. The film is about a girl named Alma who wanders into a deserted town and store.

Step 3.

Let the children listen to the soundtrack of the film. Can they guess what kind of film this is? Thriller etc? What moods? There is quite a lot of suspense etc.

Step 4. (slides 56)

Tell students they are going to watch the start of the film, show the film and pause before she enters the shop. What do you think will happen next?

Think about the following questions:

Who is she?
What is she doing there?
What do you think she is going to do?
Why is she so interested in the shop?

Step 5.

Watch the rest of the animation.

Step 6. PPE (slides 715)

Now students are to answer questions about ‘Alma’ using the PEE structure (point, evidence, explanation)

Step 7.

What other questions could you ask about the film that are unanswered?

— Why is the town empty?
— Where is the shopkeeper?
— What does he do with the dolls?

*Can the children draw/describe what they think the owner of the shop looks like? Maybe produce a wanted poster.

— Who do you think the other dolls are?

Step 8. The Five Senses (slide 16)

Describe the atmosphere in the doll shop. Complete the table with words and phrases to describe the inside of the shop (Appendix 2)

Step 9. Noises.

What noises might the following make? Write one word to describe the sound.

1) The chalk against the wall as she writes her name.
2) The snowball she throws hitting the door.
3) The door opening.
4) The wheels revolving on the bicycle doll.
5) The doll’s glass eyes moving at the end.
6) The table ascending with the new doll in the window.

Step 10. Suggested emotion (Appendix 3)

Step 11. Emotion Graph (Appendix 4)

Step 12. Thoughts and feelings (slides 1718)

Step 13

Put students into pairs* and give them 2 minutes to come up with as many words as they can to describe character. Then get feedback from the whole class.

*You can use Appendix 5 for pairing

Step 14

Give them a Character Traits Sheet (Appendix 6). Elicit or explain the meaning of the words.

Step 15. (slides 1920)

Create a mind map about Alma

Step 16

Hold a plenary session based on the following question: Curiosity, Rebellion, Temptation, Consequence. What do each of the words above mean and how do they relate to Alma?

Step 17. Reflect on the film.

— Describe the film in your own words? What happened in the story?
— Did you like the film? Why/ Why not?
— What words would you use to describe the film?
— Write a sequel to this film perhaps changing parts of it. (slide 21)

Step 18. Reflect on the lesson (Appendix 7)

— What did you learn from the lesson?
— What new words describing character did you use?
— What did you enjoy about the lesson?
