Ход урока

I Организационный момент. Приветствие (Warming up)

Are you in a good mood today? Ready for productive work?

II Введение в сюжет урока. Создание атмосферы иноязычного общения

What did you do first when you got up this morning?

(Looked at the phone, checked the time on my phone, switched of the alarm clock on the phone, read the news on Instagram, listened to music…)

III Этап целеполагания

We can’t imagine our life without modern technology. Has it changed our life completely? As any other phenomena, it has both positive and negative sides. At our today’s lesson, we are going to speak about science and technology and how they affect our modern society.

IV Основной этап урока

Look through the text about science and technology. Fill in the missing words.

We live in the age of 1) s…. and technology. Our life highly depends on the scientific 2) i…. and modern technologies. Science has changed the lives of people largely. It has made life easy, simple and fast.  Modern 3) g… are used in such sectors as medicine, education, infrastructure, electricity, aviation, information technology and other fields. Almost everyone has a modern TV, a microwave oven, a laptop, an I-pad and a mobile phone. With the help of modern 4) d… we have an opportunity to access news, documents, images, sounds, video, games. We can make friends, book tickets and purchase different things online. However, science and technology also have a negative side, which affects human lives and pollutes the environment. We should use them in reasonable limits so that they won’t do harm to our health and ruin our social life.

Do you use many gadgets and devices at home? People are becoming more dependent on high-tech devices. Is it good or bad? Speak about positive and negative aspects of science and technology.

(On the one hand, on the other hand, moreover, in addition, but).

What is the most popular gadget with teens nowadays? (a mobile phone) Why? Speak about the advantages of this modern gadget.

Questions:

1. Is it a useful device?
2. Do you often text messages to your friends and relatives?
3. Does your phone have an access to the Internet?
4. Do you listen to music, download pictures, and watch videos on the phone?
5. How can it help you at your studies?
6. What is it the source of?

Unfortunately, for every plus there is a minus. What are the main disadvantages of mobile phones?

(A kind of obsession, distract, neglect social life, do harm)

Should they be banned at school?

No Mobile Phones at School

Nowadays more and more students bring their mobile phones to school. While I believe that students should carry mobile phones in case of an emergency, I am strongly opposed to these phones being used at school, particularly in the classroom.

Firstly, many students travel to and from school without their parents. Therefore, it is important for them to have a mobile phone in case they need help or have an accident on the way to school or home.

Furthermore, who work may need to contact their children. For example, if a parent has to work late, the student has to be told if arrangements have been made for a relative or neighbor to look after them.

On the other hand, nothing is more disruptive during a lesson than the sound of a mobile phone ringing or playing an annoying tune. Moreover, students who send and receive text messages in class are not paying attention to the lesson.

In conclusion, I feel that students should be allowed to take mobile phones to school for use in an emergency. However, all phones should certainly be turned off during the lessons.

Summary of the information.

1) Актуализация пройденного материала

I wonder, if you remember other important inventions and discoveries. Let’s play crosses and noughts.

1. Making a genetic copy of something. It might be copying just one cell or it could be a whole animal.

2. It connects all the devices and appliances in your home so that they can communicate with each other and with you. You can give command by voice, remote control or computer.

3. It will become harder to tell the difference between the human and the machine soon. All body parts will be replaceable. A computer will function like the human brain with the ability to feel.

4. Thomas Edison made 1000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing it and finally succeeded.

5. Sir Alexander Fleming a biologist was awarded the Nobel Prize for the discovery of this antibiotic.

6. Sir Tim Berners-Lee is a British computer scientist who created one of the most revolutionary inventions of the 20th century. Most of the mobile phones have an access to it.

7. They will travel through your blood stream to anywhere in your body to repair damage. When you have an upset stomach, you will swallow a very small cherry tasting robot.

8. A device worn on or around the head over the ears to listen to music privately.

9. This device is a part of a smart home. You get a picture of who is at the door.

Which of these discoveries is the most contradictory?

(Cloning) Look at the blackboard. How are they related to cloning? What do you remember about cloning?

Физкультминутка

2) Дебаты. Debates. Cloning a human

Развитие речевых умений говорения.

Учащиеся отвечают на поставленные вопросы, каждый участник группы участвует в обсуждении.

The Pros of Cloning.

1. Organ replacement. (Transplantation) Cure for disease.

One big advantage of cloning is that it allows scientists to take small amounts of cells from a certain organ and use them to grow new organs.

2. It helps infertile couples to bear children. It removes the barrier of infertility.

The children will have the DNAs and qualities of both parents.

3. It can save the endangered species of animals and birds and bring back extinct species. We can clone soldiers or people who will do dangerous jobs. Cloning outstanding people will become possible too.

Your ideas….

The Cons of Cloning.

1. Moral and Ethical Arguments of Cloning.

This type of cloning refers to human and reproductive cloning. One of the problems of creating a cloned copy of a human being is that it creates a moral and ethical dilemma. Since the original and the copy are both human beings, this means that the clone has the same rights as the original. It would be illegal to use the clone’s parts or organs for replacement in the original. If the original organism has genetic defects, these transfer to the clone as a copy of the original.

Cloning a human will lead us to extinction because of the same genotypes.

2. Nobody knows what mental, social and medical consequences cloning a human can bring. It is expected to bring about new diseases and cell mutation. It’s an unpredictable and uncertain process.

3. Cloned humans will feel as if they are not humans. There will be discrimination because of this.

4. There will always be someone who would like to use such technology for his own advantage or benefit.

Your ideas…..

Useful Words:

I see your point, but I think…
Yes, I understand, but my opinion is that…
That’s all very interesting, but the problem is that…
I’m afraid I can’t quite agree with your point.
Excuse me, but that’s not quite correct.
Sorry, I just have to disagree with your point.
“Well, I think that…”
Here’s the main point I want to raise…
Just to be clear, here is what I mean…
“So finally, we…”

3) Listening. What outstanding scientists or inventors would like to meet? Do people change the world? What or who should with start with?

Listen to some tips on how to quit talking and begin doing.

The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing

V Сообщение домашнего задания (творческое)

How did Steve Jobs save an entire corporation with the help of a blender?

The period from 1995 to 1997 brought Apple nearly $ 2 billion in losses. The salvation of the corporation required radical measures, so Steve Jobs decided to lay off some of the employees with low efficiency, recruiting new ones to replace them. At the interview, potential candidates were asked only one question, the answer to which had to be found in half a minute.

The Steve Jobs mystery:

You were reduced to the size of a dime and thrown into a blender. Your weight has also decreased, but your body density has not changed. The blades will start spinning in thirty seconds. What are your actions?

VI Рефлексия

Учащимся предлагается ответить на вопросы:

Did you like the lesson?
Did you improve your language skills at the lesson?
Did you like to debate?
Did you work productively? Who was the most productive and active at the lesson?

VII Подведение итогов урока, оценка активности учащихся, выставление отметок
